Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A major international retailer, IKEA, is finally coming to Las Vegas.
The big news was officially announced in Monday. Locals have been anxiously awaiting this for years and it looks like it's finally happening.
"The fact that we don't have to drive four hours to the store, you know, only 10-15 minutes is perfect for us," said local William Crozer.
IKEA Las Vegas will open in southwest Las Vegas near Sunset Road and Durango Drive, and is scheduled to open in the summer of 2016.
IKEA will create 1,000 construction jobs. Upon completion, the store will employ 300 workers.
The location will be 351,000 square feet and located on 26 acres.
"We don't open that many stores, we don't do it often, and Las Vegas is one of those metropolitan areas that haven't had a store but has been on the cusp of being big enough to warrant it," said Joseph Roth, IKEA spokesman.
IKEA has 38 stores nationwide, but residents in the valley have had to drive 250 miles to Covina, California, to get their ready-to-assemble furniture.
"Just to have something that's literally 15 minutes down the road is going to be awesome. I think all of Las Vegas is going to benefit from it," said Brandon Jones, shopper.
The Las Vegas location will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively-designed items, 50 inspirational room settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children's play area, and a 450-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes.
"I'm just overjoyed because it really makes a statement. They don't build just anywhere and they're international," said Susan Brager, Clark County Commissioner.
The project still needs final approval from Clark County. Action News was told that could happen by the fall with a groundbreaking set for next spring.
