Blogger says Toyota has eyes on Las Vegas???
LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) --
Never underestimate the power of a blogger.
After one local writer posted a story about Toyota considering North Las Vegas as home to a new plant, local officials are all abuzz.
Could it be true? What would a project of this size mean to North Las Vegas?
News 3's Mackenzie Warren is getting to the bottom of it.
You would hear the sound of corks popping all over city hall definitely.
North Las Vegas city officials might not exactly be pouring champagne but blogger Mike Henle sure does have their attention.
City Manager Tim Hacker loves the idea of a manufacturing and distribution plant coming to his city.
“That would be a great Christmas gift for the community and the start of a great new year,” Hacker said
Henle took to his blog to say, "Toyota" is coming to town.. and the auto giants already scouted two sites."
Out near Craig and Losee is one of the places Henle wrote Toyota is considering but even if toyota was looking here there's a good chance we wouldnt even know about it.
Most companies are very guarded.
Hacker explains many large companies are discrete when they're looking to expand sometimes operating under a project name.
News 3 went to the Economic Development director to ask if she has heard from Toyota.
"I've not heard from Toyota," said Terri Sheridan who heads economic development for North Las Vegas.
If anyone from the City of North Las Vegas were to hear from Toyota it would Sheridan.
"If they're eyeing North Las Vegas, typically they're calling us," Sheridan said.
She added that the city is not working with Toyota but Hacker points out it might not be city land.
"There is so much privately held land out there it wouldn't be unlikely to come out, to send an engineering crew to do some surveying," Hacker said.
When Warren called Toyota, a representative told her the company has no plans to build in North Las Vegas and when she asked if they had at least looked, they gave the same answer.
And though Sheridan's phone hasn't rung yet, she's not giving up hope.
Ccould this in fact be a real interest?
"I would say anything could be real at any point in time."
Henle's sticking to his story and says in his dozens of years covering the auto industry he has reason to believe a plant truly is in the works.
It would be a great Christmas gift whether it be this next year or two years from now.
So for now its just a holiday wish. Either way we know what city officials are dreaming of this Christmas in North Las Vegas.
