Festival promoter SFX Entertainment has announced plans to build a City of Rock outdoor music venue on the Las Vegas Strip through its music festival subsidiary, Rock in Rio.
Billed as the “world’s largest music festival,” Rock in Rio was founded in 1985 and has produced 13 festivals. According to the company, more than seven million people have attended a Rock in Rio festival.
In Las Vegas, SFX would build a permanent open-air concert venue to host Rock in Rio beginning in May 2015. Plans released for the City of Rock describe its three themed streetscapes as mimicking those found in Brazil, the United Kingdom and the U.S., and would include a Ferris wheel designed to look like a roulette wheel; a roller coaster and zip line; and five stages.
City of Rock’s location on the Strip, and which venue it is partnering with, is not being released until a later date.
The Rock in Rio music festival has attracted such performers as Queen, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Prince, R.E.M., Britney Spears, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young, Shakira, David Guetta, Muse, Beyonce, Metallica, Sting, Roger Waters and Justin Timberlake.
Rock in Rio has opened three other City of Rocks: in Rio de Janiero, Brazil; Madrid, Spain; and Lisbon, Portugal.
