Las Vegas Convention Business on the Rise
LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas is a city where people come to play and work hard. According to a recent study, Las Vegas rolls out the red carpet to most of the nation's top trade shows and exhibitions - making this the center of commerce for some industries and the convention capitol for others.
"I've been coming to this convention for 13 years, and my associates have been coming here probably about 18 years," said MAGIC show exhibitor Jenifer Bitran. "Dinner every night, lunches, I mean we are always spending – taxis, you name it."
At least 20 events are taking place here this week alone. At the Las Vegas Convention Center, the MAGIC fashion exhibition expanded this year - drawing 70,000 visitors and 4,000 exhibitors.
"I think there's maybe a little bit more consumer confidence, things that… they're feeling a little more stable maybe," said MAGIC exhibitor Barbara Lesser. "It works in a lot of ways. It's been growing every year."
On a rebound from dismal numbers in 2008, convention cashthe last two years showed significant improvement. Casinos and hotels are embracing even healthier numbers for 2012.
"It's an attraction. People love Vegas. It's a draw for our customers to come here. They can have fun at night," Lesser said.
Exhibitors at MAGIC say they see consumer confidence building which means growth for the convention and Las Vegas' economy.
"I think business is turning around, and because people are optimistic about the business turning around," Bitran said.
Last year, trade shows and exhibitions netted Las Vegas 4.7 million visitors. The largest convention remains the Consumer Electronics Show.
