Everything old will soon be new again in Las Vegas. Resort after resort is being given a facelift (see: New York-New York, Monte Carlo, The Quad, Treasure Island) if not a complete overhaul (see: Sahara, THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, Lady Luck). And now, Tropicana is reimagining itself, too.
The new, new Tropicana is taking a page from the current playbook being passed around The Strip, adding shops, dining and retail to the front of its facade. Being called, The Shops at the new Tropicana Las Vegas, a three-level building spanning just over 311,000 square feet will replace what is now, as no one will disagree, a whole lot of wasted space in front of the hotel-casino at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana.
The current pedestrian bridges will filter into the structure's mezzanine level while folks will be able to flow right into the existing hotel-casino directly from the shops. There will be street-level entry points, too, naturally. Trop's main porte cochere and lobby would be "remodeled and relocated to the northeast side of the building."
As a result, the main entry to the resort hotel on Tropicana Avenue will be closed and relocated to Ocean Drive as the primary means of ingress/egress for vehicular traffic. A new bus turnout will be constructed along Tropicana Avenue.
The Clark County Zoning Commissioners gave their blessing to the $100 million project earlier this week, calling it "terrific" and expressing excitement for the turnaround of that section of The Strip. It's hoped that shovels will hit the ground by the first half of 2014 with an anticipated completion date by 2015's end. Some 200-300 permanent jobs are expected to be created.
Specific brands aren't being mentioned yet, but plans call for a pharmacy, convenience store, restaurants (some with outdoor terraces), retail, and a food court as future lease tenants. Sounding familiar, eh? Let's hope those pedestrian escalators are finally working when they arrive.
