LAS VEGAS -- Three high-tech companies in southern Nevada say the Las Vegas valley could become the new Silicon Valley and the exploding tech field is putting locals back to work.
They say it can be tough for tech businesses to get started. Many are looking for low-cost real estate and the trained people ready to work. For those reasons, local tech leaders say the valley is the place to start.
The sleek walls of the Cobalt Data Center guard the personal information of companies across the country. At the helm, CEO and president Jeff Brown who says southern Nevada is the best place to house such important data.
"Low risk of natural disaster, there is inexpensive real estate, access to good labor," Brown said.
Brown believes in the Las Vegas location so much, he commutes here once a week from the Bay Area. Now, he is trying to convince other tech leaders to come here as well.
"We've got to bring them here and show them how much more is going on in this community," Brown said.
Local tech CEO Jeff Grace is on board too. He runs NetEffect, a full service information technology company of 12 years. Grace says Tony Hsieh and the Downtown Project is helping highlight the emphasis on getting tech workers to move here and stay here, a practice he also follows.
"I feel like there are always opportunities for good hires here in Las Vegas,"
Grace said.
Grace says in some ways, the valley offers a better tech market than places like Silicon Valley.
"There is less competition as a tech company for clients and resources really," Grace said.
Executives like Brown say the city may be a long way off from being the next Bay Area, but that may not be all bad.
"I don't know that we want to be the next Silicon Valley. I think there's a different way to look at it," Brown said.
He says while not all tech businesses would be a good fit here, many are finding their niche in Las Vegas, predicting solid, steady growth will keep them here for years to come.

Crown Resorts Ready to Bid for Cosmopolitan Casino in Las Vegas http://www.casino.org/news/crown-resorts-ready-to-bid-for-cosmopolitan-casino-in-las-vegas APRIL 26, 2014 BY KATIE BARLOWE The Cosmopolitan has lost nearly $300 million since opening, but is still considered one of the most valuable properties on the Las Vegas Strip. (Image: Wikimedia Commons) Australian casino mogul James Packer failed once in the American gaming market, but that’s not stopping him from giving the US a second try. According to reports out of Australia, Crown Resorts – the gaming firm owned by Packer – is planning to enter into the fight to take over The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Crown is likely to be just one of several companies that will take a look at purchasing the sprawling casino resort on the Strip. With almost 3,000 hotel rooms, it would give any owner a major stake in America’s biggest gambling hub. Currently, The Cosmopolitan is owned by Deutsche ...
