RTC preparing for Sahara Express launch

Posted: May 17, 2012 3:07 PM PDTUpdated: May 17, 2012 3:07 PM PDT

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Regional Transportation Commission is marking the launch Sunday of its Sahara Express route, which, it says, will improve the commute from east Las Vegas valley neighborhoods to the resort corridor in the west end.

The launch stems from a ruling last month that added and eliminated routes around town in streamlining move.
Under the approved changes, the new Sahara Express route will include a third branch of service in the east valley which will operate east on Vegas Valley Drive, north on Hollywood Boulevard and west on Sahara Avenue. This branch services neighborhoods around Las Vegas High School and East Career and Technical Academy.

The two other branches off the Sahara Express are for Lamb and Nellis boulevards.

In addition, the board last month held off on eliminating Route 207, which stretches from Alta Drive from the west and Stewart Avenue to the east, and deferred that decision for a year. This deferral affects Route 106, which services Rancho Drive. The RTC said no modifications will be made to that route since portions of it are included on Route 207.

Other route changes and eliminations expected to go in effect Sunday, according to RTC, include:
  • Route 211 (Smoke Ranch/Carey), which starts at the Mountain View Hospital and travels east along Smoke Ranch Road and Carey Avenue to Nellis Boulevard, will be eliminated.
  • Route 104 (Valley View/Torrey Pines) and Route 214 (H Street/D Street) modifications will be made to provide transit riders from Route 211 with replacement service between Simmons Street and Las Vegas Boulevard.
  • Route 208 (Washington), which starts at the Westcliff Transit Center and travels east along Washington Avenue, will continue east to Sloan Road, instead of Hollywood Boulevard, due to low ridership. The new route will travel south on Sloan Road, west on Bonanza Road and back to Washington Avenue via Nellis Boulevard.
  • Route 402 (Henderson Connector/Boulder City), which currently ends at the Galleria at Sunset Mall, will be extended to the South Strip Transfer Terminal along Sunset Road. To accommodate the extension of Route 402 and eliminate redundant service, the operating hours of Route 212 (Sunset) will be reduced.
