benefits down 15 percent in April

CARSON CITY — The number of Nevadans filing first claims for unemployment benefits in April fell 15 percent from the same period of a year ago.
But the number of people seeking benefits was up from March, 14,931 compared to 13,267.
The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today initial claims have fallen for 16 straight months compared to the same period the previous year.
Department Economist Bill Anderson said Nevada’s labor market is “firmly on the mend.”
Initial claims are most closely related to the number of people who have recently lost their jobs, officials said.
Prior to the recession, the average monthly level of initial claims was 12,500.
