A popular apartment-hunting website has named Las Vegas and Henderson one of the best places to retire
in the country.

Apartments.com released its annual ranking of the cities that are best for snowbirds and retirees. It ranked cities based on the high inventory of affordable apartments, thriving economies, high retirement populations, the weather and flexible leasing options for short or long stays.
"We wanted to look at elements that make a city attractive to both part-time residents and to today's retiree who is active and seeking a vibrant community with weather that lets them stay active," said Dick Burke, president of Apartments.com. "There are some surprises on the list - the biggest one being that typical snowbird cities in southern Florida were edged out by cities in Arizona and Texas. This is because our list takes into account more than just sunshine."

Las Vegas and Henderson were second only to Austin, TX, and followed by Scottsdale, AZ, San Antonio, Phoenix, Dallas, Jacksonville, FL, Plano, TX, Overland Park, KS, and Mesa, AZ.
Apartments.com listed the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Las Vegas as $829 and in Henderson as $977.
Burke cited Overland Park, KS, as an example that the list isn't all about golf and beaches. He said it pays to investigate lesser-looked-at cities that help ensure a full and exciting lifestyle.
