Taxable sales in Nevada, Las Vegas surge by double digits
Taxable sales in Nevada and Las Vegas jumped by double digits in February, the state Department of Taxation reported Thursday.
Sales of tangible goods sold by merchants statewide rose 10.2 percent year over year statewide to $3.2 billion. Clark County sales increased 11.1 percent, to $2.4 billion.
Big gainers statewide included dealers of cars and car parts (up 22.9 percent), retail sales inside hotels ad motels (up 25.7 percent) and general merchandise stores, including department stores (up 16.9 percent). Bars and restaurants saw sales jump 11.9 percent.
Construction continued its years-long decline, falling 25.5 percent.
Taxable sales help fund prisons and schools. Gross revenue collections on sales and use taxes totaled $259 million in February, an 11.5 percent increase compared with February 2011.
